One thing that I was talking to Chi-Ho (the former Hong Kong Disneyland Ambassador) little earlier, Disney fans know a lot more about their collection that we do. Because a Disney fan can specialize in buttons or pins or something like that, and they can know everything there is to know about the buttons or pins. But in the Archive, we don’t specialize, we have to be generalize, we know little bit about anything. So I think a lot of the fans could answer some more questions about their collection than I could.

There are websites that we can go to ourselves to find out earlier Disney products.

(Chi Ho:Dave,
(Chi Ho: So, I think I have a question, Dave.)
(Dave:是。)
(Dave: Yes.)
(Chi Ho:
(Chi Ho: Have you ever met Walt Disney personally?)

I did, um, not since I have been the archivist for the company. But I when was a teenager visiting Disneyland, I have ran into Walt Disney that day.

(Chi Ho:
(Chi Ho: What was your story?)

I was just walking through the park and I saw Walt Disney walking through the park. Before the park opened, everybody knew the name, Walt Disney, but nobody knew what he look like. But the year before the park opened, we started our Disneyland television show, and Walt Disney introduced the television show. So people started to know what Walt Disney look like, it became much harder for him to walk around the park not be recognized.

So I was walking on behind him and I thought wonder ‘whether people are going to recognize he is Walt Disney’. Every once a while, you would see a father telling his son “that’s Walt Disney over there!”

I wanted to get his autograph, and I didn’t have anything to write with. So I ran into the nearest shop, which was a (Main Street) Magic Shop*, they had these long pencils, that wrote in different colours. That was the only thing they have. So I bought one of those and took it outside. And that was the only time I got to talk to Walt Disney. I asked him if he could sign an autograph for me. Then he politely declined, he said when started to sign autographs he got a whole crowd of people around him, and he can never get his work done. So he asked me ‘write me at the Studio and I will send you my autograph.’ So I did, and he sent it. I still have it today.

The only other time that I saw him in person was on July 1, 1966, when He was the Grand Marshal of the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.

So Walt Disney was died in December of 1966, and we started in June of 1970. So there was about 3 years in there, and his office was closed at the Studio after he died. One of my first jobs when I started with the company was to go into the office and inventory everything in there.

Of course, this was very honourable for me, because I have been a Disney fans. I enjoying going to Disney movies, and enjoying going to Disneyland in California. But ‘here I am the only one with the key go up to the Disney’s office, I go in and sit on Walt Disney’s chair, and I am the only one in there. It’s just very strange!’

One thing that the company decided they wanted to do was to reproduce Walt Disney’s office. This has always been done in United States at the Presidential Museum, when every a President dies, they create a museum-library for the President and one thing they always do there is to reproduce his office. So we thought we might like to do this with Walt Disney’s office.

Did you know that?

The theme of 1966 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California was “It’s A Small World”. Walt Disney and Mickey was the Grand Marshal of the parade. The photo above was taken from the parade and it is a rare photo for Disney. Firstly, it is one of the few coloured photos with Walt Disney. Secondly, it is one of the few coloured photos that Walt Disney was taken with Mickey. Thirdly, it was taken outside the park.
